Port return to Noel Mulligan Oval on Sunday to play undefeated competition leaders Collegians. The Dogs are coming off a home win against Helensburgh, while The Blacks are riding high after having knocked off last year's grand finalists in Dapto and Thirroul in consecutive matches. It promises to be a grand battle with big names scattered across the park. Former NRL players Jason Ferris, Wade Forrester and Justin Brooker will lead the way for a Collies team which exudes talent. Richard Turner is back at Collies after a brief stint with The Bulls and will relish the opportunity to match up against former team mate at Collegians, Jason Sullivan. Sullivan started his career with Port Kembla before successfully switching to Collies where he was part of many a winning team. The brute strength of Juita Suka on the wing, again up against his old club, will match up against a speedster in Chris Barnes. Dane Dorahy and Justin Brooker form a formidable centre pairing and the two will command Port's Craig Simon and Lulia Lulia bring their "A" game with them to Noel Mulligan on the day. Simon returns from a week off on the sidelines where he coached his team to an enthralling victory over the reigning premiers. Jason Dorahy at five eighth has the pedigree and the experience to trouble Port all game. He'll be up against Greg Hooper who had an outstanding defensive game against Thirroul. One of the two match ups of the day will be evident in the halves where the in form Mark Simon will square up against Collies Captain-Coach Jason Ferris. Both players enjoy running the football and leading their sides around the paddock. With both contestants having explosive speed off the mark, a battle royal is looming. The second match up comes in the forwards where perhaps the two most dominant forward packs of the competition in recent weeks will line up against each other. Josh Guyatt will have his hands full trying to contain the workhorse Port hooker Johno Johnson. Johnson was absolutely dominant against the Butchers for a 20 minute period in the second half and was surely one of the reasons Port went on to victory. Collies mountainous bookends Daniel Bacon and Nathan Lakeman will find stiff opposition in the form of Clint Hill and Grant Bobbin. Together with Simon, Johnson and Wade Forrester, Clint Hill must rank as a leading contender for player of the year honours at the halfway stage of the competition. Mark Blanchard and Wade Forrester will match up against the Port backrow of Andrew Bobbin, Nick Nikitaras and Grant Roberts. Roberts in particular has had an eye-opening year so far and seems to be going from strength to strength with his new club. With Luke Roberts back from injury in reserve grade, Port's bench extends. Daniel Jiminez played well off the bench and Ben Carr added a bit of zip around the rucks when he got on the field. Glen McPhee is also having a great year coming off the bench, but The Blacks are up against perhaps the deepest side in the competition. The game kicks off at 3pm and should be a spectacle to behold. Reserve Grade sees the resurgent Port Kembla side up against the more fancied Collegians team. Having catapulted themselves into third spot with a win against Thirroul, Wayne Harvey's boys will be in for a big show against The Dogs.
The team will be up for the game after riding the highs of recent weeks. Luke Roberts returns to stiffen up the forwards, where Wayne Harvey, Ben Fera and Matt Skora are already in great form. Mohamad Alchaar has made the hooking position his with some strong performances, while Glenn McPhee has been a standout at five-eighth. Kane Roberts and Joel Murtin are working well together in the centres, while young Troy Fleming has really come of age out on the wing, trying to keep up with the livewire Daly on the other side of the field. Reserve Grade kick off at 1.30pm. The Wollongong Asphalt under 18's scored a tough but strong win against Thirroul last week, and will face the same opponents on Sunday. Nick Henry had a great game for Port of the bench and his impact as an interchange player will again be a factor for the side. Anthony Harris has been consistently tough up front, and the standout game from Jon Koot last week gives fans good hope of another dominant forward performance. Kane Armstrong's dummy half running was a feature of the Thirroul game and the strong running out wide by Oscar Ferreira proved damaging to the Thirroul backs. Aaron Troiano and Joel Court in the wing spots have been standouts for The Blacks and their contributions have not gone un-noticed by the Black's fans. The game should see another entertaining battle with the young Blacks keen to get Port off to the right start on an afternoon which promises to be a blockbusting feature of local rugby league. The Under 18's game kicks off at 12pm. |
