Belconnen Beat Blacks |
|
Port have gone down to West Belconnen by 44-12 in round 1 of the 2004 CRL Country Challenge Cup. Port trailed 20-8 at half time and couldn't reel in the reigning Canberra Premiers. The game was an uphill battle for The Blacks from the start with a number of players unavailable. The list of absentees included Grant Bobbin, Nick Nikitaras, John Johnson, Nathan Heffernan and Juta Suika. The scale of the task was compounded when, from the kick-off, The Blacks received the ball and stepped into touch giving West Belconnen first use of the ball.
While the result was disappointing for Port's first hit-out, it must be remembered that five quality players were not available for selection. It was also Port's first game time for 2004, while for West Belconnen, it was their third match of the season. The game was played in oppressive heat with both teams requiring regular player changes to ensure they did not suffer from the heat's effects. Port's next trial will be played at Noel Mulligan Oval on Saturday March 6th. First Grade will go up against the John Cross coached Steelers Jersey Flegg side, made up of a wealth of Illawarra talent. Preceding matches on the day will include Under 18's and reserve Grade sides opposing their Dapto rivals. Times and structure of the matches are yet to be determined and details will be made available when possible. |
