Port Lose '65 Forward

The Port Kembla Club have lost a respected member of the footballing fraternity with the passing of 1965 premiership winning forward, John Carberry. Carberry passed away on Christmas eve after battling cancer for the final stages of his life.

John was born and raised in Port Kembla, the town he represented with the Mighty Blacks, culminating in premiership success in 1965. Passing away at 60 years of age, John is survived by wife Judy and children Janelle and Graeme.

John Carberry's footballing career also included a successful coaching stint at Batemans Bay where he led his team to a Grand Final win in 1967. Yass, Leeton and Grafton were also blessed with his coaching skills. Port regained Carberry's coaching services in 1982 and 1983 where he controlled the First Grade teams.

His many years of service to rugby league, particularly junior rugby league in the Illawarra where he coached and managed junior teams, including the undefeated Windang Under 13's team of 1983, were rewarded with life memberships to both the Windang Rugby League Club and the Illawarra Junior Rugby League.

The loss of John Carberry will be heart-felt by all who knew him. The Port Kembla District Rugby League Football Club send their condolences to the Carberry family for their loss.
