BEATH BEST IN LEAGUE

Thirroul playmaker Aaron Beath was last night named the Illawarra Tooheys League Player of The Year. The award caps off a memorable 90th Anniversary year for The Butchers who won a unique treble - The University Sevens, The Country Challenge Cup and the Illawarra Tooheys League First Grade Premiership.

Voting for the Player of The Year is done by Referees after each First Grade fixture. In winning the award, Beath out scored other league leading players such as David Bil, Terry Lamey (Dapto), Ben Sammutt (University), Jason Dorahy (Wests) and Jeremy Smith (Port Kembla).

David Bil took out the award for Best Forward in the competition while University captain Ben Sammutt received the trophy for Best Back. Port Kembla were assured of two pieces of silverware with David Hall being named the League's leading pointscorer and Rod Silva getting across the line for the top tryscorer in the league with 16 tries, half of which came from intercepts.

The Blacks club also picked up the trophy for most tries scored by a club, underlining the squad's attacking potential. The trophy cam courtesy of a number of players reaching double figures in the try scoring category - Rod Silva (16), Paul Lokys (12), David Hall (11), Jason Hardy (10), Craig Simon (10).

The Under 18's Player of the Year voting was a hotly contested affair. Port Kembla's Illawarra representative, Glenn Pestana, polled well, but in the end, it was a dead heat between Thirroul's Tye McCarthy and Wests leading pointscorer, Rhys Hanbury for the prestigious award.

Thirroul also claimed the trophy for Minor Premiers in First Grade, and were crowned worthy Club Champions for 2003.

The Annual Tooheys League presentations mark the official end to the 2003 season and the start of the "Silly Season" where clubs will attempt to sure up their ranks for the coming season. Port Kembla and Wests have led the way in announcing their new player-coaches. Port will be headed by Craig Simon, while Wests have pulled off a major coup by signing recently retired Manly NRL fullback Brendon Reeves as Captain Coach for the 2004 season. Already the interest in the 2004 Illawarra Tooheys League Season is at an all-time high. BRING IT ON !!
